Most Liked

Patrons rave about the enormous portions and homemade quality of the food. A standout is the famed steak and ale pie, cooked to perfection and filled with robust flavor.

The casual and friendly vibe of The Wheatsheaf makes it a community favorite, where everyone feels like family. Most visitors appreciate the attentive staff who create a welcoming atmosphere.

There's an impressive selection of beverages, from craft beers to fine wines, adding to the enjoyment of any meal. The availability of live music adds vibrancy, making each visit a unique experience.

Most Disliked

Some visitors note a lack of dessert options after feeling too full from their hearty meals; the generous portions can make it hard to squeeze in a sweet treat!

On peak days, particularly Friday evenings, the pub can get crowded, leading to longer wait times and a bustling atmosphere that may not appeal to everyone. While the lively crowd can be part of the charm, some patrons prefer quieter dining experiences.

Additionally, the unique slope of the interior may pose a challenge for those with mobility issues, despite the pub’s overall accessibility features.

Just had our first visit and it was amazing!!! Ordered home made steak and ale pie and steak and kidney pudding. Both were beautifully cooked, full of flavour and just so delicious!! Food came out cooked to perfection, nice and hot and looked beautiful. Dipped each of my chips into the gravy savouring every one!!! Chips like your Mum used to make - what's not to love?!?!?!? Only regret was that I was too full to have a dessert!! Will definitely try again next time. Was very quiet ( 4.30 on a Friday afternoon) and because there was only two other tables taken everyone was whispering but by the time I started eating, I would have happily sat by myself alone in a corner!!! Absolutely beautiful food and will definitely be going again - SOON!!!

The best chips I’ve ever had. Visited as a group for a midweek catchup after receiving many recommendations. The waitress was so lovely and attentive, and immediately made us feel so at home. Really enjoyed the halloumi burger, and the chipotle sauce on the side was perfect so I could tailor the burger to my spice level. Generous portions at a really reasonable price. Everyone in the group enjoyed their meal in such a warm welcoming environment. 100% recommend, will be returning soon

19TH MARCH 2025. ‘Wandering Wednesday’ this week took both Hubby Neil and I to a new place….. ‘The Wheatsheaf’ in St. Helens. I proper olde Worlde pub full of sport memorabilia and photos of local businesses of days gone by, there is bad subsidence with all of the mining of yesteryear’s and feels like your walking down a slope but it definitely adds to the character and charm of the old pub….. it still has the old waitress service button bells on the walls around the top of seating areas….. where years ago you pushed the button to alert the waitress to your table to take your drink orders….. they may still work but I didn’t press it!!! Tempted though!!! Another great pub that serves proper homemade food and plenty of it too! Both went straight to entrée’s: Neil had proper homemade chunky chips, peas, fresh carrots and a HUGE suet pudding…… with thick, rich, glossy gravy and more in a little jug on the side. I had had the mixed grilled!!! It was HUGE! ‘Desperate Dan’ would have struggled to eat it….. Neil had to help me out eating it……and this is why! Rib eye steak, a full chicken breast, a massive pork chop, thick slice of gammon, two sausages, onion rings, tomato, mushrooms, black pudding, chunky chips and two eggs!! I ordered a side of peppercorn sauce and a wheelbarrow to take me out in!!! Waiting time was cooking time, the two ladies that served us, sadly I forgot to ask their names, were very attentive, polite and made us feel welcome…… Thank you…xx This is an old pub, with old decor but that’s the style of this establishment…… the food was amazing and as you can guess, VERY filling, we were going to have starter too 😳thankfully we decided not too!!! Excellent choices on the menu, something for everyone. Would we go back? That’s a definite YES!

Just love the Wheatsheaf and go back time and time again. It never disappoints. A traditional pub, it has a lovely welcoming charm. The pub floor slopes so when you walk through the door you feel like you’ve already had about six glasses of wine! But it just adds to the quaintness of this lovely pub. The food is always cooked fresh and fabulous and the service always friendly. I just love the sizzling platter, sweet Chili chicken my favourite! There’s also a large selection of gorgeous desserts and an extensive menu ranging from lunchtime snacks to Sunday lunch. It has a lovely big beer garden with plenty of outdoor seating as well as some all weather pods for when the weather is bad. Looking forward to my next visit

Excellent pub food, one of the best steak & ale pies I've ever had. Lovely pub, really old traditional feel. Nice starters and deserts and some good offers on too.

First time coming here and it did not disappoint. Home cooked food, large portions (they do give takeaway boxes if you don't manage to finish. It has a lovely homely feel, like you went to your mums for tea!
